The family surname of Eaton is shown in the ancient manuscripts and cartularies as tracing their ancestry to Anglo Saxon origin. This notable family emerged primarily in the county of Cheshire where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated at Blackden with manor and estates in that shire. They flourished in that county acquiring Tolethorpe Hall in Rutland and Chapell Bar in Nottingham. Meanwhile, the main branch of the family was seated at Eaton in Cheshire where they erected Eaton Hall and also acquired Messing Park and Stretchworth Park. Most notable were the Eatons of Eaton Hall.
Eatons in Shropshire
The research of ancient documents has revealed the first mention of the name "de Eyton" in Shropshire, England, otherwise known as "Salop," circa 1154. The first to hold this name was Robert de Eyton of Shrewsbury in county Salop who lived circa 1154. Robert de Eyton was seated as Lord of the Manor of Eyton-on-the-Wildmoors. His exact date of birth and parental line has yet to be determined, but records indicate he was the progenitor of a great line as branches of the Eyton family acquired other estates and manors throughout England and Wales.
de Eyton to Eaton
The Shropshire progenitor was referred to as "de Eyton," although the Welsh family was known simply as "Eyton." Eventually, variant spellings of this family in different geographic regions; members or cadet lines of the same family became known as as Eyton, Eaton, Eton, Etton, Ayton, etc., although, in many instances, originally pronounced the same -- i.e., "eye-ton."
EATONS TO THE NEW WORLD
The Eaton's settled in the eastern seaboards of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Maine, Virginia, and the Carolinas. According to research conducted by the Hall of Names in Ontario, as well as historical records, among the first families to the Colonies were Francis Eaton, his wife Sarah and son Samuel who arrived on the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620; John Eaton of Dedham, John Eaton of Haverhill, Jonas Eaton of Reading, Nathaniel Eaton of Cambridge and William Eaton of Reading who settled in New England from 1630 to 1640; Theophilus Eaton with wife Anne and children Mary, Samuel, and Theophilus who arrived on the Hector and settled first in Boston in 1638 and finally New Haven, Connecticut; Alexander Eaton who settled in Boston, Massachusetts in 1651; William Eaton who settled in North Carolina about 1670; Thomas Eaton who settled in Shrewsbury, New Jersey in 1670; Eliza Eaton who settled in Pennsylvania in 1682; and John, George and Edward Eaton who settled in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania from 1683 to 1686.
Early Virginia settlers came at or near the mouth of the James River and include Nathanial Eaton circa 1635; Samuel Eaton to James City Co. circa 1635; Peter Eaton to New Norfolk Co. in 1637; Henry Eaton to the Isle of Wight Co. in 1638; Peter Eaton to the Isle of Wight Co. in 1652 and George Eaton to Lancaster Co. in 1654. Their descendants scattered far and wide throughout the South and Middle West.

He received the shreivalty of Shropshire from King Henry I. While his parentage is more or less obscure, there is evidence to show that Flaald, his father, lived in Brittany and was a brother of Alain, seneschal of Dol, descended from the old Armonican counts of Dol and Dinan. Alain Fitz Flaald was also the father or grandfather of William Fitzalan, steward to David I, King of Scotland, ancestor of the Stuarts, kings of that country. Alain Fitz Flaald was also the father of William Fitzalan, to whom Henry II gave in second marriage Isabel De Say, baroness of Clun, the greatest heiress of Shropshire. He was ancestor of John Fitzalan, who married Isabel, sister and co-heiress of Hugh d'Albigny. Upon a division of Hugh's property at his death in 1243, the castle of Arundel was assigned to John, son of the aforementioned John and Isabel, who thus became the first Earl of eventually passed to Mary, daughter and heiress of Henry Fitzalan, who carried it, together Arundel of the Fitzalan line. This property with the earldom and the barony of Maltravers, to her husband Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, in which family it still remains. HISTORY OF THE BAPTISTS By Thomas Armitage
THE AMERICAN BAPTISTS
VII. NEW CENTERS OF BAPTIST INFLUENCE--SOUTH CAROLINA--MAINE-- PENNSYLVANIA--NEW JERSEY
In 1687 a company of Welsh and Irish Baptists crossed the Atlantic and settled at Lower Dublin, Pa., otherwise called Pemmepeka, Pennepek or Pennypack, a word of the Delaware Indians which signifies, according to Heckewelder, a 'pond, lake or bay; water not having a current." This company organized a Baptist Church, built a meeting-house near the water bearing this name, and sent forth its influence all through Pennsylvania, also into New Jersey and New York, Delaware and Maryland, as its pastors preached in these colonies. Its records were kept with care from the first, and are still preserved in a large folio. We are indebted to Hon. Horatio Gates Jones for the following and many other interesting tenets. The records state:

'By the good providence of God, there came certain persons out of Radnorshire, in Wales, over into tills Province of Pennsylvania, and settled in the township of Dublin, in the County of Philadelphia, namely, John Eaton, George Eaton and Jane, his wife, Samuel Jones and Sarah Eaton, who had all been baptized upon confession of faith, and received into the communion of the Church of Christ meeting in the parishes of Llandewi and Nantmel, in Radnorshire, Henry Gregory being chief pastor. Also John Baker, who had been baptized, and a member of a congregation of baptized believers in Kilkenny, in Ireland, Christopher Blackwell pastor, was, by the providence of God, settled in the township aforesaid. In the year 1687 there came one Samuel Vans out of England, and settled near the aforesaid township and went under the denomination of a Baptist, and was so taken to be.' These, with Sarah Eaton, 'Joseph Ashton and Jane, his wife, William Fisher, John Watts' and Rev. Elias Keach, formed the Church. Samuel Vans was chosen deacon. and was 'with laying on of hands ordained 'by Elias Keach, who 'was accepted and received for our pastor, and we sat down in communion at the Lord's table.'
