REV. RICHARD THOMSON

"Magister"

1564 - 1606

Rev. (Magister) Richard THOMSON's ecclesiastical appointments were from King James (possibly as a distant relation). He also received preferential treatment in terms of large sums of money each year for his services and was given a second lucrative assignment on the Borders at the time of the King's journey into England after Queen Elizabeth's death.

Rev. Richard THOMSON was the Clerk (legal position) at the Kirk Assembly in 1605 and was put in a position of siding with his King or everyone else. He sided with the King which resulted in several clergyman having to go to trial in England, many were exiled. Richard may have been a witness at the trial. He died at the time of the trial. His nephew-in-law Thomas Hamilton was the lawyer for the King.

Richard THOMSON  married (1) Florence CROMLAN? (2) Agnes Foulis (widow of Rev. Adam Hepburn)

CHILDREN OF RICHARD THOMSON AND FLORENCE CROMLAN:

DAVID THOMSON  was born before 17 DEC 1592 in Corstorphine, Scotland (near Edinburgh) Baptized St. James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, 17 December 1592,  Married in St. Andrews, Plymouth, Devonshire, 18 July 1613 Amias COLE (COLLE), born about 1593, daughter of William Cole (COLLE) [NHGR 9:113].

DAVID THOMSON

1592-1628

David THOMSON was born 17 DEC 1592 in Corstophine, Scotland and died in December 1628 on THOMSON's ISLAND, MA at age 36 years.  He married Amyes COLLE ( Amias Cole) on 13 July 1613 in Plymouth, England.  She was born in England, place and date unknown to William COLLE and Agnes BRIANT.

David THOMSON was appointed First Acting Governor of MA

Amyes COLLE died in Massachusetts, place and exact date unknown, sometime after 1649.

MARRIAGE: St. Andrews, Plymouth, Devonshire, 18 July 1613 Amias Cole, born about 1593, daughter of William Cole [NHGR 9:113]. She married (2) about 1630 Samuel Maverick (her son John Thomson calls him "my father Mr. Samuell Maverick" [ Aspinwall 70]), son of Rev. JOHN MAVERICK . She was living 3 September 1672 when her son Nathaniel Maverick of Barbados mentioned her in his will [ NEHGR 69:158].

NOTE: On 26 May 1648, Aspinwall received two documents from "Amies or Emes" (Cole) (Thomson) Maverick. The first stated that on 1 April 1615, "William Cole of Plymouth in the County of Devon, shipwright," and "David Thompson of Plymouth aforesaid apothecary and Ems his now wife ... in consideration of a marriage already had and solemnised between the said David Thomson & Ems the daughter of the said William" created a lease to several rooms in a house in Plymouth "wherein the said William Cole now dwelleth" for threescore years if all three should live so long. The second document, dated 3 January 1625[/6], stated that whereas "I W[illia]m Cole of Plimouth, shipwright, have had & received of my daughter Amies Thomson the sum of fifty pounds which money I was to have towards the buying of my land upon condition that I should make my land over to my daughter & her children, which I have done as by my will appeareth, now I have received of her above in writing of the sum of thirty pounds, which I am to give an account for to her husband David Thomson".

In 1876 Charles Deane published a lengthy account of the life of David Thomson, including the full text of the indenture between David Thomson and the other merchants of Plymouth  In 1973 Ralph E. Thompson and Matthew R. Thompson compiled a history of Pascataway: De Facto Capital of New England, 1623-1630 (Portsmouth, New Hampshire [cited above as Pascataway]

David THOMSON came to New England in 1623 on the ship "Jonathon", sailing from Plymouth, England in the spring of 1623 and settled at a place called Little Harbor on the west side of Piscataqua River where he is found in that year by Robert Gorges and by Christopher Levett  About the year 1626 he took possession of the island in Boston Harbor which now bears his name where he soon after died leaving a wife and an infant son to whom the General Court of Massachusetts subsequently granted this island.  In Robert Gorges's patent he is styled David Thomson "gent" Winslow calls him a "Scotchman"  In this indenture he is described as of Plymouth  His name is often mentioned in the Records of the  Council for New England .

NOTE: "On October 22, 1622 the "Council for the affairs of New England In America" grantd one David Thomson "6000 acres of land and one Island in New England". Thomson undoubtedly was a man of standing in Plymouth and doubtless enjoyed an honorable position with King James.

The Island in Massachusetts Bay aquired by David Thomson was the only Bay Island which had a boat harbor.  Comprising an area of 157 acres, it was situated about 8 miles from Weymouth, slightly more than a mile from Braintree and about a mile from Dorchester. It was named after Thomson and still bears his name."
